The Ministry of Internal Affairs has released information regarding the cause of the collapse of a part of a residential building located on 26 May Street in Batumi.

According to the agency, Zaur Budatov, the owner of one of the apartments on the first floor of the residential building, hired 2 people for repair works in the apartment. Under the direction of the apartment owner and in gross violation of safety rules, construction and repair works were carried out in the apartment, which led to the collapse of one of the entrances of the building.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs has detained 3 people in connection with the incident.

"The investigation established that Z.B., the owner of one of the apartments on the first floor of a residential building located on 26 May Street in Batumi, hired Kh.S. for repair works in the apartment. And G.S. Hired. Under the direction of the apartment owner and in gross violation of safety rules, construction and repair works were carried out in the apartment, which led to the collapse of one of the entrances of the apartment building on October 8 this year.

Investigation is underway under Article 240, Part 2 and Article 187, Part 3 of the Criminal Code of Georgia on the facts of violation of safety rules during construction or other work, damage or destruction of another's property, which resulted in loss of human life and serious consequences.

"At this stage, firefighters rescued two civilians, who were taken to the hospital, and five bodies were found in the rubble. Intensive search and rescue operations, as well as investigative and procedural actions are underway," the statement said.
